Science, Metal & Calisthenics - A Chat with Coach Ale

What inspired you to become a trainer, and what's your favorite part of coaching at Primal Gym?

I first got into martial arts and weightlifting as a teenager, but I struggled to make progress. The advice I heard at the gym was often confusing or contradictory, making me feel frustrated. To make sense of it all and learn how to train effectively, I decided to obtain a BSc Hon in Physiology, Sport Science, and Nutrition. This taught me how to separate facts from myths and spot unreliable advice. Becoming a personal trainer felt like the natural next step. I wanted to help others who, like me, felt overwhelmed by all the noise and just wanted clear, evidence-based guidance on their fitness journey.

My favourite part of coaching at Primal are the people. There’s a real sense of community here - it’s more than just trainers and clients, we’re all in it together. I also love how we run our classes. We try to keep things fun and creative, turning warm-ups into games and setting challenges to keep everyone engaged. And of course, my colleagues are incredible. They are super knowledgeable, supportive, and I always learn so much from them.

Can you share a success story from one of your clients that really motivates you?

I once helped a client in his 50s achieve his first muscle up, with the help of resistance bands. I was very happy about it and very proud of them. When I say Calisthenics is for everyone, I mean it! Another one was when I received a text from a member thanking me for helping them improve their handstand. That really made my day!

What's your go-to workout song or pump-up anthem?

Usually, anything rock/metal.

Outside of the gym, what's your favorite way to stay active or recharge?

I always commute by bike, which keeps me very active. I also enjoy cycling outside the city on occasional day trips with friends. To recharge, I love playing guitar, watching movies and cooking something nice.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to someone who's just starting their fitness journey?

Forget the “no pain, no gain” mindset. That kind of approach often leads to injuries, plateaus, or even unhealthy training and eating habits. Real progress comes from consistency and smart, gradual progression, not from chasing pain. Yes, training requires effort and fatigue, but it should never come at the expense of your overall well-being.

What's your favorite discipline to teach at Primal Gym and why?

Although I enjoy a variety of training styles (like gymnastics and weightlifting), calisthenics is by far my favorite to coach. There’s something almost artistic about the skills! They’re beautiful to watch and even more rewarding to learn. It’s fun, accessible to all ages and levels, and doesn’t require much equipment. Plus, the progressions are virtually endless - there’s always another challenge to work toward, which keeps it exciting and motivating.

What's something people might be surprised to learn about you?

Despite being Italian, I know nothing about football haha.

Why is Primal Gym the best place for someone to achieve their fitness goals?

I think a supportive environment makes it easier to achieve our goals, which is what we aim to create at Primal. Both the staff and members are incredibly encouraging and helpful. We pride ourselves on being welcoming to everyone, regardless of background or fitness level. It’s the kind of place where you feel motivated, comfortable, and genuinely supported every step of the way!
