Spartan SGX is coming to Primal….. What you need to know!

What is it?!

Spartan SGX is an evidence-based group training program. Although the primary goal is to prepare people for obstacle races, it is much more than that. The program is equally about health and wellness as it is about exercise. The program is intended to motivate clients to explore new territory both physically and mentally. Programming is preplanned and more focused on teaching and learning rather than instructing and following, thus moving away from the current trend of creating workouts rated on a sweaty and sore scale.  

I don’t want to do a Spartan Race, can I still come to class?

Of course! Although we can’t promise not to convince you to join the team….  Anyone can join the class including:

  • Obstacle Course Racers:
    Perfect for those preparing for their first Spartan Race or seeking advanced race-specific training. SGX classes cover functional fitness, mobility, and endurance, essential for tackling competitive OCR events.

  • Runners: The programming is perfectly placed to help runners maintain strength and mobility thus reducing injury risk leading up to big events. 

  • Fitness Enthusiasts and Gym Members:
    Ideal for those who want to improve overall strength, aerobic and anaerobic capacity, and mental toughness, even without participating in races. It’s great for breaking away from traditional fitness routines.

  • Beginners or “Couch to OCR” Individuals:
    Welcoming to people new to fitness or intimidated by obstacle racing. SGX provides structured, scalable programming to build competence and confidence. By following the same program for several weeks it allows you to learn and grow rather than chopping and changing exercises. 

  • Lifters and Strength Athletes:
    Offers a dynamic approach to fitness by incorporating mobility, endurance, and unconventional movements, complementing heavy strength work and creating well-rounded athleticism.


How does it work?

You will work in 6 week blocks, following the same program for the 6 weeks. The initial weeks will be very much focused on form and technique with the progress being made in the latter weeks. Leading up to the races in June there will be three focused blocks of training, all of which will consider endurance, strength and athleticism:The blocks are structured as follows:

  • Block 1: Function - Building volume, bodyweight strength exercises, mobility, stability and balance.

  • Block 2: Fitness -   Metabolic conditioning, traditional strength, mobility, stability and more complex flow patterns.

  • Block 3: Performance - Endurance threshold training, , loaded bodyweight strength and power, more complex patterns.


I can’t make it every week, is there any point in going every now and again? 

Of course! Whereas the program is designed to have the most impact when followed consistently, you will still get a solid workout if you take the occasional class!
